The evening was a delight for the 63,749 fans in the stands, watching the bikers who ripped through the trucked-in dirt. They wiped out, bounding over mounds and filling the building with noxious exhaust fumes and the roars of their brightly colored machines.
"It fits American mentality, where it's kind of rough," said Roger DeCoster, Team manager for Suzuki who was also a 5 TIME RACE CHAMPION before he retired in 1980. "It's kind of like modern rodeo."
The circuit consistently sells out in Southern California, the fan base includes actor Ben Stiller. Scheduled for 2004 is "Supercross: The Movie."
"There is a lot of interest these days in extreme sports," DeCoster said, "and this is the original extreme sport."
